Okemo Mountain School is an independent school approved by the Vermont State Board of Education
Okemo Mountain School is dedicated to delivering a rigorous academic curriculum while providing intense on-snow training that would not be possible in a traditional school setting. Our goal is to assist student-athletes in the realization of their athletic goals without compromising their academic goals.
The strength of Okemo Mountain School’s winter term program lies in our staff’s ability to communicate with the sending school of each individual student. Our Dean of Academics works closely with the sending school’s guidance department to coordinate the requirements that must be met by the end of our school year. Throughout a student’s time at OMS, our teachers keep in close contact with the sending school teachers to ensure that curriculum requirements are met. However, a large responsibility falls on the shoulders of the students to meet the expectations set forth by their OMS teachers in order to meet sending school curriculum requirements.
Even with heavy competition schedules, our students are expected to return to their sending schools academically prepared with all class curriculum requirements met. We are able to accomplish this with our low student-to-teacher ratio and the commitment of each student. Students must assume a large amount of independence in completing their academic requirements, particularly when traveling for training or competition. This necessary independence and close teacher-student interaction creates an excellent environment for academic growth.
Our classrooms are located in a grand and scholarly 1800’s building in downtown Ludlow. For athletic training, privately owned and operated Okemo Mountain Resort is unmatched in its generosity for private, on hill time allotted to a school. The opportunities for personal growth at OMS are endless. There is a tremendous amount of motivation, dedication, and passion for skiing and snowboarding that is required by an individual to even take part in such a program. Once here, the students at OMS are immersed in an atmosphere encouraging respect for self, peers, and community as well as perseverance and responsibility.
This program is very demanding and is not meant for everyone — it requires a strong commitment to success by each of our student-athletes. Our student-athletes assume the responsibility to meet the demanding athletic and academic requirements and are expected to uphold their commitment to academics and athletics while at OMS.
