Chris Hurka came from the cornfields of Illinois and raced USSA out of Wilmot Ski resort with a vertical drop of 350 ft. Chris then raced Division I for Castleton State College. His first year coaching professionally was at Temple Mountain in NH, followed by several years at Pico Ski Club. Chris also managed a ski shop in Killington for seven years. After this, he coached for 3 years at Killington Mountain School under Stever Bartlett, US women’s team coach and the current head coach of the Middlebury College team. He was then the head U19 coach for the Pico Ski Club and the Rutland High School team for seven years before coming to Okemo and coaching what was J4s and 5s (U14) for several years.
Chris has returned to OMS as the Alpine Program Director and the Head Men’s U19 coach. He believes in focusing on creating a safe learning environment and concentrating on skiing fundamentals, technique and tactics. He lives in Clarendon, Vermont with his wife and 3 boys. He is a carpenter in the summer and specializes in building professional skate parks. Aside from skiing, he enjoys snowmobiling, bike riding, kayaking, and tennis.
