OMS Snowboard Team brings home the medals!

OMS Snowboarders competed in the 2013 USASA Nationals Competition at Copper Mountain in Colorado last week and produced some terrific results. Everyone placed in the top ten in their disciplines and although our team is smaller in size than others, we definitely pack a mean punch!

Some notables included Taylor Spaulding’s 8th finish in the Superpipe in the Youth Men division, Casey’s amazing slope run in inclement weather conditions, Amanda’s big frontside airs in the superpipe, Joey Okesson’s sleeper yet awesome run to finish 3rd in the Superpipe, and Anna Valentine’s top three finish in each discipline she competed in, which was unbelievable.

The OMST weekend program also produced some amazing results with numerous top ten finishes and some amazing riding by the Groms team and Richie Hogie on the racing side as well. All in all, we had 16 top tens with 4 podiums finishes at Copper this year!!

Closing Ceremonies

OMS Closing Ceremonies were held on Friday, March 29th at Epic Restaurant at Solitude. We had a great turn out of students, parents, friends, faculty and staff. We were able to celebrate great results both academically and athletically and graduated two Seniors. We are so proud of our seniors Casey Abraham and Quinn Trainer and excited for the bright future ahead. Please click on respective link for a listing of the award recipients. School Closing for Tuesday March 19th

Due to the amount of snow that is already on the ground and poor road conditions, no training will be held this morning. Classes are also cancelled for the afternoon as the snow is predicted to continue falling heavily throughout the day. If your student can get safely to the mountain – enjoy the powder! If not, find another way to enjoy this late March storm.

Looks like we should be back to business as usual on Wednesday though!

School Closing Update Wednesday February 27

Training will be held as usual this morning – please drive carefully though! However, in light of the heavy snow predicted to fall over the course of the daytime hours, we are cancelling academic classes this afternoon.

Students should still report to OMS at 7:30 am and will be transported to the mountain for training as usual. They will be brought back to OMS after training and should be picked up from there. If you/they prefer them to ski home after training, please just have them clear that personally with their coaches.

Students whose terms are ending this week, please look for communication from teachers today regarding any work that might need to be done.

Third Annual Winter Festival

Please join us for our Third Annual Winter Festival! Okemo Mountain School’s Winter Festival is a fundraiser to benefit Okemo Mountain School. Please join us for an evening of wine and cheese tasting, Vermont beer tasting, and a sampling of foods from many of our local restaurants. Enjoy catching up with old and new friends, browsing the silent auction, and supporting our local ski and snowboard academy.

School Closing Update for Friday February 8th

Training will be held as usual today, Friday 2/8/13. However, in light of the fact that snowfall will increase later in the day and fall steadily into the night, academic classes will be cancelled for the afternoon.

Student-athletes should still meet their coaches at 7:30 am at school and will be transported back to school after training.

The school building will be open until about 4:30 pm.

U12s will still attend the Quechee SL camp as originally intended.

Shred the Gnar Camp

The OMS Shred the Gnar Camp is our third OMS Camp and is an excellent opportunity for any athlete looking to train intensively with the OMS coaches and experience life at a Ski/Snowboard Academy. Head Coach Luke Bonang and Coach Jerry Tucker will be working with campers in the pipe, park, and on the Mountain throughout the week with campers hitting the books in the pm, followed by strength and conditioning to end the day.

This camp will be very conducive for progression as the slopes will be quiet and Okemo’s parks and pipe will be in tip-top shape! We will also be taking a day trip to Killington to ride the Bear Mountain parks in the latter part of the week. GET GNARLY AND COME JOIN US!

Third Annual OMS Board of Directors’ Reception

The 3rd Annual Okemo Mountain School Board of Directors’ Reception Open House at OMS will be on Saturday, December 15th from 7 – 9 pm. There are no tickets, entry fee, or need to RSVP. Please just stop by to enjoy some food and drink. OMS is located at 53 Main Street in Ludlow. This is a great opportunity to learn about OMS and see what’s new or just mingle with friends! Feel free to bring along anyone else who you think might be interested. I hope to see you all there!

Ski and Snowboard Swap Wrap-Up

2012 Okemo Ski and Snowboard Swap Wrap-Up
This year’s Okemo Ski and Snowboard Swap was, once again, a successful fundraiser for Okemo Mountain School. The swap raised over $19,000 for the school, which will go towards operating costs in order to keep tuition as affordable as possible for all students.
Mariel Meringolo, Head of School and organizer of the event, would like to gratefully acknowledge all of volunteers who donated their time, as well as all of the mountain personnel who went above and beyond their normal duties to provide support to the event. Without all of the volunteers and the help of the mountain, the Ski Swap could never have been such a success. Everyone’s efforts are greatly appreciated by the entire school community!
And since it is never too soon to look to the future, mark your calendars for the 2013 Okemo Ski and Snowboard Swap:

Ski and Snowboard Swap

The Annual Okemo Ski and Snowboard Swap to benefit Okemo Mountain School is the place to gear up for the winter with new and used gear at great prices. You will find everything you need to get out on the hill this season….skis, snowboards, boots, bindings, helmets, goggles, outerwear, and more! The best part about it is that all proceeds go to benefit the Okemo Mountain School in Ludlow, VT. The Swap takes place in the Main Base Lodge of Okemo Mountain.

This year’s swap dates and times are:
Friday, November 16th; 4 – 7pm (3-4 pm preview hour; $5 admission or free for Okemo employees)
Saturday, November 17th; 9am – 5pm
Sunday, November 18th; 9am – 1pm

Also, if you are interested in selling your old gear (please no skis, boots, or bindings older than 7 years), you can sell it on consignment at the swap. 25% of the selling price goes to Okemo Mountain School – the remainder you will receive in a check about 3 weeks after the swap. You may also choose just to donate your equipment – all donations are tax-deductible. All gear must be dropped off on the following days and may not be brought to the swap during sale hours. Equipment drop-off is at the First Aid Building at the Main Base of Okemo Mountain.

Drop-off dates and times are:
Saturday, November 10th; 10am – 3pm
Sunday, November 11th; 10am – 3pm
Wednesday, November 14th; 10am – 3pm

Okemo Mountain School is a non-profit educational institution dedicated to the academic and athletic development of serious snow sports athletes. Student athletes are given the opportunity to train in alpine ski racing, snowboarding, and freestyle skiing, while pursuing a rigorous course of academic study. Okemo Mountain School relies heavily on fundraisers like the Swap to help keep tuition affordable.
