Mount Hood- The First Few Days
The skiing and riding at Mount Hood has been excellent so far for our OMS On-Snow Summer Camp! On the alpine side the focus has been balance, rotary movement and pole planting. The kids have skied a multitude of courses and everyday the coaches have seen a marked improvement from the entire group.
The snowboarders have been mainly hitting the Pro Park slopestyle and halfpipe. They have also run many of the courses set up on the Palmer Glacier. Caleb Kampf ripped a picket fence drill course that Coach Jet set and that was a lot of fun to watch!
The camp isn’t all just fun and training on snow. The athletes have also done core workouts, an intense and bloody kickball game, a long hike to Tamanawas Falls, a run at Trillium Lake, and mountain biking the Government Camp trail system.
The kids have also been tuning daily. Whether they are new to it or have some experience, all the kids have been working on new skills in the tuning room. In their free time, the activity of choice has been pick up basketball next to the Huckleberry. Last night, the Okemo crew took on the US Ski Team Development Camp crew. It is a toss up as to who won, but there were definitely a lot of fouls! These kids are competitive on and off the snow!
Today is the first day off and very much deserved. The kids have a chance to sleep in and will be going whitewater rafting in the White Salmon River this afternoon.
For the second block of the camp, we will be moving into panel Sl and then some GS. The snowboarders will be looking to master some of the bigger features in the Pro Park. The weather looks a little stormy for several days and we are crossing our fingers that it’s not too bad. It’s been a great camp so far and we are looking forward to finishing on a high note!
